7 (and a half) tips for a successful road trip

Tip # 1: Prepare your vehicle or book in advance

Those who would like to make the trip with their car consider doing a service 1 to 2 months before the departure date. For the others who wish to rent a car, two possibilities: Either rent a car with the place of return of the vehicle similar to the point of departure with an extended kilometric package or rent cars one way to each stage. Most people assume the price will be prohibitive. Of course, they don’t know car rental comparators! For the best availability and prices, book in advance (three months or more is ideal).

Tip # 2: The smaller, the better

You are in a country! Not in the other region where everything is disproportionate, the vehicles being adapted to it. In some countries, generally, the parking spaces and some of the most beautiful roads to travel are narrow. Choose to do this road trip with a compact car. If you are renting and being offered an upgrade, be wise, say NO (I know, it’s not going to be easy to turn down the brand new Jeep Renegade!). Small cars tend to be more fuel-efficient and much more suitable for traffic in a country.

Tip # 3: Check insurance!

Objective: avoid unpleasant surprises and travel serenely. First of all, check with your bank to find out the insurance included with your credit card. They are often complete but deserve to be examined. Then, check that your insurance (or that of the rental company) authorizes you to drive in the various countries chosen. I advise you to take the proposed insurance extensions. Indeed, they cover the various exclusions of basic insurance and often allow a reduction or a surrender of the deductible for a carefree trip.

Tip # 4: Find a Trusted Co-Pilot and a Compatible GPS

The three most valuable road travel tools are a good (and patient) co-pilot, an updated GPS with country maps, and a stack of good road maps, just in case. You will need a reliable co-pilot to help you decipher the foreign pronunciations flayed by the GPS.

Tip # 5: Learn the local laws

Driving laws vary by country, so you will have some homework and reviews to do beforehand to know these differences. CAUTION: Some of the most important rules are unspoken, such as driving properly around a roundabout and when / how to let a reckless driver pass you. Forums are here to help. Mastering these skills can save you from serious trouble with the locals.

Tip # 6: Think About Your Parking Needs

When booking hotels or hostels, be sure to inquire about parking availability and rates. It’s usually easier in larger cities to leave your car parked and then explore the sites on foot or by using public transportation.

Tip # 7: Don’t leave without provisions

Driving between one countryside to another side on a Sunday? You’ll see some charming castles and sheep fields, but don’t expect to find a Starbuck or any resort open: Sunday in a country = everything is closed! So make yourself sandwiches, have fruit, cakes … and water!

Tip # 7 AND A HALF: But most don’t.

Before this digital revolution, we were obliged … Today, it is possible that … And without losing the north, there is much more … But always make sure … Because generally. So, don’t forget this last tip …
